The sixth generation of the most popular smartband on the market comes with some improvements, such as the growth of the screen or the integration of more sports modes. However, it maintains the design that is so important in its success, with a comfortable aesthetic and a very light weight that allows us to use it without hardly noticing that we are wearing it.

Where is the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 located?

The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is the latest version of Xiaomi's Mi Smart Band, a series of smart bracelets that have been very successful since its launch. This smartband maintains the common strategy of the Chinese manufacturer, being a device with a very good value for money. In addition, Xiaomi has been adding notable improvements in response to user requests and, in this way, also achieving a higher quality smartband.

Specifically, the company has opted to offer this Mi Band 6 in 7 additional colors beyond the traditional black. In addition, the user can choose from more than 60 different watch faces from the start. On the other hand, the most current model has a larger screen (it goes from 1.1 inches to 1.56 inches).

The Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 has also improved in the sports functions it offers the user, which grow from 11 to 30 sports modes. Health control is also broader, as it receives tools such as blood oxygen monitoring and analysis of breathing when sleeping.

All these improvements are very important in the user experience, so it is clear that the Mi Band 6 is the best smart bracelet in the Xiaomi catalog. Since it is only a few euros away from the Mi Band 5, it is worth paying that difference to enjoy a larger screen and new features.

If we widen our view to analyze the smart bracelet market, we find several clear rivals for this Mi Band 6. One of them is the Huawei Band 6, with a style closer to that of a smart watch. The main differences between the two models is that Huawei has a rectangular screen with a physical button on the side and 96 training modes. Its price? It went on the market for 59 euros, being available in stores such as Amazon, PcComponentes and the Huawei website.

Another good alternative to the Xiaomi Mi Band is the Amazfit Band 5, very similar to Xiaomi's, but with the difference of integrating a microphone to talk to Alexa. The OPPO Band Sport is another good rival, with an AMOLED screen, 12 sports modes and up to 12 days of battery life.

Design and display

The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is still a very comfortable device // Image: Beatriz Alcántara Gil

The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 maintains the aesthetics of the company's previous smart bracelets, with a screen that occupies most of the front and a silicone strap. As you can see in the images that accompany the analysis, we have had the opportunity to analyze the black model. During these weeks a sensation has been repeated: the Mi Band 6 is practically imperceptible when we wear it.

The comfort of this device is based on two keys. On the one hand, its lightness, since this model barely weighs 12.8 grams. Although it is slightly heavier than the Mi Band 5, it is still just as comfortable. The other key is its size, since it is a compact bracelet, with dimensions of 47.4 × 18.6 × 12.7 millimeters.

Thanks to its size and lightness, we can wear the smartband throughout the day without being a nuisance at any time. During the tests, we have used it to work, to sleep and to play sports without any problem. Without a doubt, this has been one of the details that I liked the most about the Xiaomi gadget.

In this comfort, the strap also plays a leading role, made of TPU and with an aluminum alloy buckle. The truth is that the bracelet breathes well and offers a completely secure closure. As was the case with the previous editions, you can change the bracelet for other straps for the Mi Band 6 and thus innovate with its design, it will seem that you are wearing a different model every day. You just have to take out the capsule and insert it into the new bracelet.

Taking advantage of the fact that we are talking about removing the bracelet, we must also point out that to charge the Mi Band 6 you do not have to remove the capsule. This is not new, since it already happened in the Mi Band 5, but it continues to be one of the best decisions that Xiaomi has made in the evolution of the smart bracelet.

In the design of the front of the Mi Band 6 we find one of the changes with respect to the previous generation, and that is that the new bracelet dispenses with the button that was located at the bottom of the screen. You no longer interact with the bracelet through the button, but through gestures. Thanks to the elimination of this element, the screen of the Mi Band 6 occupies almost the entire front.

8 best apps for the Xiaomi Mi Band 6: make the most of your bracelet

This screen is one of the components that has improved the most compared to the Mi Band 5. We are facing a 1.56-inch AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 152 x 486 pixels, 326 dpi and up to 450 nits of brightness. In practice, it is a panel that offers very good quality, noting the improvement that this growth represents from the 1.1 inches of the previous generation.

The panel of the Mi Band 6 offers good color reproduction, good viewing angles and a good level of sharpness. In addition, when we see it in sunlight, we do not miss a higher brightness. Of course, it does not have automatic brightness, so it must be adjusted manually. By the way, this screen is covered by a tempered glass with anti-fingerprint coating so that dirt will not be a problem.

In short, the design and the screen repeat as one of the strongest points of the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band. The manufacturer has been able to evolve the bracelet without putting its comfort at risk and improving those aspects that could be improved, such as the size of the screen.

Autonomy

The progressive growth of the screen and, above all, the reduction in battery capacity, have caused the autonomy offered by the Mi Band to be limited in its latest versions. In this case, the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 mounts a 125 mAh battery.

Squeezed to the maximum, with all the health functions activated, exercising almost every day of the week and connected to the mobile to receive notifications, the autonomy of the smart bracelet reaches five days of autonomy. In addition, during this time we have also used it with a high brightness level.

If you use it in a normal way, without so many sports and health monitoring, from Xiaomi they promise an autonomy of up to 14 days. However, it is difficult for us to believe, we imagine that the real autonomy will be around 10-12 days depending on the use of each person.

In addition, from the firm they also recommend using the energy saving mode, with which autonomy could even reach 19 days. As always, it is you who has to weigh whether you prefer to enjoy all the functions of the bracelet or give priority to greater autonomy.

The reduction in the autonomy of the Mi Band with the arrival of the new generations is notorious, since the Mi Band 4 could offer up to three weeks of battery life without many problems. However, they are the consequences of wanting to have a larger screen and more interesting functions, so you have to accept them.

When going through the charger, the smartband is accompanied by a magnetic charger that is magnetized to the back of the capsule. As we mentioned before, it is no longer necessary to remove the entire capsule, the device can be charged while the bracelet is on. According to our experience, the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 takes around one hour and forty minutes to fully charge.

Sports and health functions

The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is a smart bracelet focused on sports tracking and health monitoring. As we have mentioned in previous lines, the sports section has improved compared to the previous version, with the passage from 11 to 30 sports modes. In addition, the smart bracelet can automatically detect 6 of these workouts, including walking or running. Of course, you have to activate the automatic detection manually.

During these weeks of testing, I have missed the integration of some modes such as tennis, which is available on the Xiaomi Mi Watch. However, it is appreciated that the manufacturer has opted for training such as dance, kickboxing or yoga. It should also be mentioned that the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 has water resistance of up to 5 ATM, which is why we can also use it for swimming.

Among its specifications is not the GPS, so the smartband must be accompanied by the mobile phone if we want to record the exact route of a route. This has happened to us, for example, when we wanted to monitor outdoor cycling training. We do not know if it will be due to the lack of GPS or due to a specific failure of the Mi Band, but in one of these exercises the bracelet has stopped automatically recording the kilometers traveled, forcing us to stop the exercise and start a new monitoring.

The analysis of the physical activity carried out by the device offers us very interesting data, such as the heart rate maintained throughout the training, the calories burned or the average pace. Depending on the exercise it is, the Mi Band 6 will show you some data or others. For example, if you go for a walk, it tells you about the cadence and the average size of your stride, for example.

In addition to the bracelet, all this information can be consulted in the Mi Fit application, which offers a clearer view of the content. This way, it will be easier to see how you are improving and all the goals you have already met. From this app you can also configure the exercises that will appear in the "Training" section.

As for the accuracy of physical activity monitoring, we already know that the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band is not the most reliable device if we want to obtain professional-level data. However, there are already more advanced smartwatches for that, such as those from Polar. However, the Mi Band 6 is a very useful gadget to encourage us to play sports and maintain a healthy life. After all, we have a personal trainer on our wrist that helps us achieve our goals and improve ourselves.

The best sports watches to keep fit

Moving on to health functions, the truth is that the Mi Band 6 has all the necessary tools in a device of its price. First of all there is the heart rate analysis, which can work steadily throughout the day. In fact, from Mi Fit we can choose if we want this sensor to be activated manually or automatically every 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes.

Of course, this sensor does its job while you play sports to confirm that everything is fine. When your heart rate is higher or lower than normal, the bracelet can notify you through vibration.

One of the great novelties of the device comes in the form of monitoring the level of oxygen in the blood, a physiological parameter of great importance in health. In this case, the user must carry out the measurement through the SpO2 function. By the way, this sensor also works at night to keep track of the quality of your breathing while you sleep. You will be able to tell because the red light on the back of the capsule stays on.

The health functions of the Mi Band 6 do not end here, which also takes into account the heart rate to analyze your sleep patterns. In addition, the bracelet can also keep track of your stress levels, even offering you breathing exercises to calm down when you need it.

On the other hand, with the Xiaomi Mi Band you can also control the menstrual cycle to know what will be the days of your menstruation, fertile period, ovulation days and more. Of course, to do this you will first have to complete the information about your menstruation in the application.

All these data, plus physical activity data, are used by the PAI system to inform you about your physical condition. To reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and increase life expectancy, it is best to keep your PAI value above 100 points.

As you can see with all these tools, the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is a more than complete smart bracelet in health matters. It does not offer as precise data as medical devices can offer, but they serve perfectly to get a good idea about our state of health. As Xiaomi specifies, "all data and tracking should be used for personal reference only."

Other functions of the Xiaomi Mi Band 6

The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is compatible with those devices with Android 5.0 and iOS 10.0 or later versions. To connect it with the mobile phone, it is necessary to install the Mi Fit app, the one we talked about earlier. It is a free app that you can easily download from the Google Play Store.

Google Play Store | My Fit

Once both devices are connected, the first thing we have done is update the Mi Band software to install the latest available improvements. Then, we have proceeded to customize, starting with the clock face. There are more than 60 different models, so we recommend that you see them all to choose which one you like the most, if you prefer one in which all the data appears or, better yet, a more minimalist one.

We have also mentioned that after the button disappears on the screen, the Mi Band 6 is controlled through gestures. If we swipe up from the home screen, we can navigate through the applications menu. On the contrary, if we slide to one of the sides, we see the shortcuts. Both aspects can be configured from Mi Fit to choose which elements we want to see.

In our experience, the smartband offers good performance, with quick navigation between the different menus and functions. The connection is also good, although we must mention that we have suffered one or two disconnections for no apparent reason. Nothing that is a serious problem, of course.

The applications available in the bracelet are those that are from the beginning, since the installation of external applications is not allowed. Among those available, we find the usual tools: mobile app notifications, events, alarms, weather, music, world clock, flashlight, Pomodoro timer, take photo, stopwatch, timer and find phone. You can see that they are many and varied, which adds great value to the Chinese device.

In the settings section there are also functions of great importance for the user experience. We can activate the do not disturb mode, set a time for the screen to turn off, modify the brightness and lock the screen so that no one gossips our information. Of course, the titles of the functions scroll slowly through the panel, so we must wait a few seconds to read them in full.

The title of the settings appears cut off on the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 // Image: Beatriz Alcántara Gil

In Mi Fit we can find other settings of interest, such as the activation of the "Raise the wrist" mode. In our case, we have preferred to program it so that it does not bother us at night.

The edition that we have been able to test is the one that does not have NFC. To have that chip and be able to use the Mi Band 6 to pay in establishments, you have to pay an additional 15 euros. And since we are talking about absences, the device also does not have assistants like Alexa. Despite this detail, the Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is still a very complete smart bracelet if we take into account that it barely costs 44.99 euros.
